Janet Benn is an animation artist who began by studying experimental film, then trained in traditional animation methods. Benn was involved in the N.Y. independent animation movement of the 1970s and ‘80s. For several years she also worked on projects such as "Beavis and Butt-Head", "Courage the Cowardly Dog" and the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Many people know those names, but Janet's most rewarding work was done with The Hubley Studio, after studying with John and Faith Hubley at Yale Graduate School of Art. The Hubleys won 3 Oscars for animation in the '60s and '70s with films on social issues like racism and overpopulation. Since 1998, Benn has also been teaching the production of 2D and 3D animated films and video production to college students and adults. Her courses on technique always include the aesthetics and history of the media. Now, as a member of AgX Boston Film Collective, Benn is working on new projects and teaching experimental filmmaking at their facility in Waltham, MA.
